Taguig to use WiMAX

-

The Taguig City government announced that it will soon adopt the WiMAX or worldwide inter-operability to microwave access technology to help facilitate the delivery of basic services in the city.

Gary Gonzales, chief operating officer of Blue Media Network Inc., said they have just started to “roll in” the technology in Taguig this month and will have cover the city by the end of September. Blue Media is the developer of the private wireless network that will run WiMAX all over Taguig.

“The WiMAX capacity is several notches higher than what the Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity access) technology can reach. If the Wi-Fi can cover the whole of a café at a maximum distance of 100 meters, the WiMAX… can cover… a 20-kilometer radius,” he said.

Gonzales said “local officials led by Mayor Sigfrido Tiñga simply wanted an efficient but quick delivery of basic services to the people through the use of WiMAX.”

During the recent launch of the project, Tiñga sampled the WiMAX technology, holding a videoconference with officials through a live feed from the Western Bicutan barangay hall and the City Hall.

He also viewed a test run of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed in key parts of the city and on a police patrol car, showing a live traffic feed straight from the cameras.

Tiñga and Vice President Noli de Castro also made a video call to an overseas Filipino worker in Malaysia.   – Rhodina Villanueva
