Caloocan calls for relief goods for typhoon victims

Caloocan City police chief Superintendent William Macavinta, who was tasked by the city government to lead recent mercy missions in typhoon-ravaged Aklan province, appealed yesterday for more relief goods for the hundreds of families displaced by the storm.

“Thousands of residents in Aklan would soon experience hunger, for they are almost dependent on relief goods to survive,” Macavinta told The STAR.

He said the typhoon destroyed Aklan’s crops, and it would take at least two months for residents to recover from the devastation.

Macavinta, a native of Aklan who served as the province’s police director for two years, is appealing for the public to donate more medicines, clothing, canned goods, rice, blankets, noodles and other basic necessities for the typhoon victims.

On Tuesday, Macavinta, led the Caloocan City contingent in delivering some 15 tons of relief goods to the town of Numancia.

Mayor Enrico Echiverri said Gov. Carlito Marquez and Numancia Mayor Erlinda Templonuevo said Caloocan was the first and only local government unit that extended assistance to Aklan.

On June 29, tons of relief goods, gathered through the efforts of national Liga ng mga Barangay president Ricojudge Echiverri was also sent to Aklan through a passenger ferry. – Pete Laude
