Makati to train residents in slaughterhouse operations

The Makati City government, through its Makati Training Placement and Livelihood Consortia (MTPLC), will offer a short-term certificate course in slaughtering operations to residents for free in response to the growing demand for workers in the industry, especially abroad.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay said the free training is open to all residents who are able to pass the pre-requisites that require mature and responsible learners, given the nature of the skill to be taught.

“Employability is one of the main thrusts of the city government. In planning our course offerings at MTPLC, we always look at emerging trends in the job market so we can ensure that our graduates are armed with skills matched to prevailing demands, thus giving them a bigger chance at getting hired,” Binay said.

He said the MTPLC is conducting the short-term course in partnership with the Slaughter House Operators Association of the Philippines.

The course is designed to equip the trainee with operational skills, adequate knowledge and proper attitude in handling processes involved in slaughtering cattle, oxen or swine.

The training program will cover 360 hours, adhering to the curricular design following basic tenets of competency-based technical and vocational education training). It is composed of three levels of competencies: basic (20 hours), common (40 hours), and core (300 hours).

Dr. Editha Chan, president of MTPLC, said applicants must be at least high school graduates (to be recruited by the Makati Cooperative Development Office or by referrals only), with good moral character, able to communicate in oral or written English, and a Makati resident as validated through a background check done by the Makati Action Center.

Meanwhile, enrollment is ongoing for other courses of MTPLC and the admission test is scheduled on June 26.
