200 kilos of ‘bad’ chicken seized in Pasay

-

Approximately 200 kilos of rotting chicken meat were seized by a team from of the Office of the City Veterinarian in Pasay City early morning Thursday.

Dr. Rolando Bernasor, chief veterinarian, said the meat – which consisted of different chicken parts – were already greenish in color and emitted a foul odor. Together with Pasay police officers, Bernasor’s team raided a storeroom at the corner of Raymundo street and Taft Avenue at around 3 a.m.

“The vendor has been under tight watch for several months already. We chanced upon her getting inside the room when we were conducitng routinary inspection early morning yesterday,” Bernasor said.

The vendor, who was not identified, managed to escape while one of her customers is currently being interrogated.

Bernasor said that during the operation, they noticed a vat of chlorine in the room, apparently to hide the stench of rotting meat.

Instead of burning the meat, the group brought it to the Crocodile Farm along Roxas Boulevard to feed the crocodiles.

Bernasor said the spoiled meat is sold much lower than the prevailing market price for chicken. He added that they have yet to determine where the rotting meat came from.   – Rhodina Villanueva
