Navotas completes water project for urban poor

Navotas City Mayor Toby Tiangco led yesterday the ceremonial opening of a project to provide water on tap to poor households in Sitio Puting Bato and Sitio Sto. Niño, Barangay in North Bay Boulevard South (NBBS).

The project, which was one of Tiangco’s campaign promises, was completed in less than a year and will benefit over a thousand families in the area.

The project became a reality through the cooperation of the Navotas City Government and the Maynilad Water Services Inc.

“Finally, after many, many years of waiting, our (constituents) can now avail of water services right inside their homes,” Tiangco said.

He said that for some 20 years, residents along the stretch of Road 10 close to the Manila-Navotas boundary had to get their water from private water providers. At P5 per container, most households in the area used an average of four a day, spending P600 a month.

Maynilad told city officials the new water line means that households would pay only P200 a month for water.

The city government facilitated the water project by footing the P1-million bill for acquiring right of way and one kilometer of pipes from NBBS to Road 10.

Tiangco, addressing the residents, said in jest that with the water line in place, he now faces the problem of possible overpopulation since residents can now take regular baths. – Jerry Botial
