PAWS to hotels, malls: Stop using bunnies as Easter giveaways
An animal rights’ group asked hotels and shopping malls yesterday to stop using rabbits as promotional gimmicks to mark Easter Sunday today.
Anna Hashim-Cabrera, program director of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), said their group joins other organizations in protecting the welfare of animals, which should not be used as marketing tools.
“Oftentimes, the rabbits are given to young patrons who have limited idea on how to care for their pets. The mishandling of these animals could lead to their death,” Cabrera said.
“We oppose the use of live animals as promotional items (to celebrate an occasion or festivity) whether they are given away or sold, or even ‘adopted out’ because of animal cruelty and suffering endured by the rabbits,” she added.
She pointed out that “there is also the risk that the animal could bite the patron and transfer disease.”
Instead of using real rabbits to attract customers, the PAWS official said establishments could use stuffed toys and chocolate bunnies, which are just as effective as a “come on” to guests.
She reminded establishments using live bunnies in their promotional campaign that they would not only be raising ethical questions, but also be violating the law.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Act or Republic Act 8485 appoints the Bureau of Animal Industry – Animal Welfare Division (BAI-AWD) to give licenses, permits or registration to individuals or corporations using animals for whatever purpose.
A more specific measure, Administrative Order 21, attached to RA 8485, states that other establishments keeping or selling animals (not limited to pet shops, farms or kennels) must secure a permit from the BAI-AWD so that cages, food, and conditions can be inspected for compliance with minimum standards.
This includes getting permits for pet events or promos using animals. – Evelyn Macairan
