PNP on heightened alert for Holy Week

-

The entire Philippine National Police will be placed on heightened alert today as part of the security measures as thousands of people are expected to go to provinces to observe the Holy Week, PNP chief Director General Avelino Razon Jr. said.

Razon said the 125,000-strong PNP will go on heightened alert starting 12 noon today to ensure the availability of all personnel and resources for public safety and security operations.

Razon also fielded 10 members of the PNP Directorial Staff to supervise nationwide public safety and security operations during the Holy Week.

The PNP earlier activated Oplan Bantay-Lakbay for the long summer vacation season. Part of the nationwide security plan is to ensure the safe travel of motorists and commuters via air, sea, and land, as well as security at popular vacation destinations.

PNP spokesman Senior Superintendent Nicanor Bartolome said security plan involves setting up of Police Assistance Centers along national highways, primarily throughout the Maharlika Highway from North to South Luzon, the Strong Republic Nautical Highway that passes through islands in Visayas and Mindanao, and other major thoroughfares. The Traffic Management Group (TMG) will spearhead road safety operations.

Bartolome said Police Assistance Centers will serve as quick-reaction points for police emergency and medical response, and Advance Command Post for traffic management and security operations. All PACs are linked to Patrol 117 nationwide emergency hotline and the TXT PNP 2920 text messaging hotline, Bartolome explained.

Police personnel from the Police Community Relations Group (PCRG), led by Chief Superintendent Sukarno Ikbala Sr., will man assistance booths at transport terminals to distribute leaflets on safety tips and other useful travel information.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila police chief Director Geary Barias inspected seaports and bus terminal in the metropolis to ensure the safety of commuters going to the provinces.

He said 150 policemen will be deployed at Metro Manila churches to handle peace and order during the Visita Iglesia, while another 150 will be detailed at bus terminals.    – Cecille Suerte Felipe
