A businessman was killed while an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) was seriously injured in an ambush at the University Belt in Sampaloc, Manila Friday night.
Joselito Jumahan, 28, died while being treated at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. His OFW companion, Mariano Pangan, 32, is under observation at the same hospital. Both sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the body.
Investigations showed the two victims were in a silver Mitsubishi Lancer (PRR-930) traversing Morayta street en route to España Boulevard at about 8 p.m. when an Armalite-wielding man blocked their path and shot up their car.
The two victims were hit in the initial volley of fire. The gunman then rode in tandem with a man on a black motorcycle.
Police Officer 2 Rommel del Rosario said several empty shells from an Armalite rifle were recovered at the scene of the ambush. Despite the presence of many students and commuters at the University Belt at that time, no other person was hit by stray bullets, according to Del Rosario.
Chief Inspector Dominador Arevalo Jr. who heads the homicide section of the Manila Police District, said his men still do not know the motive for the ambush.
