Parañaque City Mayor Florencio Bernabe is asking officials of the Catholic Church and other religious groups to help protect the environment by forming environmental ministries whose members will fight problems that hound the ecosystem.
Bernabe has written to Parañaque Bishop Jesse Mercado and is also urging groups such as the Iglesia Ni Cristo, the Protestants, Methodists, El Shaddai, Jesus Is Lord, and the Seventh Day Adventist Church, to join the initiative.
Churches nowadays group their members with common goals or interests into ministries.
Bernabe said he has formed a three-man delegation from the city’s Solid Waste Board, which is expected to come up with an integrated plan of action that would include how religious organizations can play an active role in protecting the environment.
“Since climate change is a global phenomenon, it only means that Parañaque will eventually have its share of this problem and the time to act through a conscious and concerted effort to minimize its ill effects is now,” Bernabe said. – Michael Punongbayan
