Pasay vets seize 700 kilos of pork
A group led by chief veterinarian Dr. Ronaldo Bernasor said, Levi Eugenio, one of his men assigned to regularly check on the Ilasi slaughterhouse on Edang street, told them that unidentified persons unloaded double-dead meat, stuffed in sacks, from a jeep at around 2 a.m.
“The men on board the jeep sped off and left the contraband in front of the slaughterhouse,” Bernasor said, adding that the double-dead meat originated from Batangas.
He said the slaughterhouse’s owner, Ernesto Ochoa, claimed he is not aware of the meat delivery.
Bernasor said he ordered the spoiled meat burned in the slaughterhouse.
“It’s easy to check if the meat is already spoiled. The color is different from what should be fresh, red meat,” he said.
An hour later, the team decided to conduct a surprise inspection at a night market at the corner of
Bernasor said they seized 300 kilos of pork that vendors were selling even if the meat was not covered by permits.
Upon seeing the group, the vendors fled and left the meat at their stalls. Bernasor had the meat burned at a nearby slaughterhouse. – Rhodina Villanueva
