Maid steals P1.4 M from businesswoman
Police are warning the public against hiring housemaids from fly-by-night agencies after a maid allegedly stole P1.4 million worth of cash and jewelry from her employer, who was then billeted at a hotel in Malate,
Police have released photos of maid, identified as Grace Nabong, 35, of
According to businesswoman Ma. Lita Pirona, 33, a resident of
Last Dec. 6, Pirona noticed that her room was in disarray when she returned to her unit. Her brother informed her that Nabong left that morning and had not returned.
An inventory showed some P30,000, a digital camera worth P45,000, assorted jewelry worth more than P1 million and a Mossimo blouse worth P900 were missing.
Chief Inspector Benigno Macalindong, who heads the theft and robbery section of the Manila Police District, requested footage taken by the hotel’s closed-circuit video camera on Dec. 6.
The footage showed Nabong entering and leaving the hotel elevator carrying two bulky bags, which Pirona claims are hers.
“The video footage clearly showed that the maid took off with the loot. We are very thankful for the hotel staff for the assistance which made the police work fast and easy,” Macalindong said.
Police failed to find Nabong at her given city address. “She could have gone to the province. We will send a team of policemen to track her down,” Macalindong said.
Police are set to question officials of the employment agency that hired Nabong. They refused to divulge the name of the agency pending further investigation.
“Some fly-by-night hiring agencies do not compel their employees to submit police and NBI clearances to vouch for their good character. Thieves disguised as maids usually come from this kind of agency,” Macalindong said.
Qualified theft charges were filed in absentia against Nabong. –Nestor Etolle
