Rescuers find body of teen who saved brother’s life

Rescue teams from the Pasig City police and local government units found the body of a 13-year-old boy two days after he was swept away by strong currents at the Manggahan Floodway.

Ryan Nayre’s body was found on the floodway’s west bank in Barangay Maybunga at 1:10 p.m. yesterday.

Nayre, a resident of Barangay Rosario, jumped into the floodway after seeing his younger brother, Ronquillo, being carried downstream by the current.

After putting Ronquillo safely on the riverbank, Nayre was himself swept away by the rising floodwaters at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, witnesses said.

Because of heavy rains Wednesday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) opened the floodgates at Barangay Manggahan to prevent the floodway from overflowing, police said.

Nayre’s parents said another child drowned in the floodway in September 2005.

Meanwhile, a four-year-old boy who was hunting for spiders drowned when he accidentally fell into a muddy creek in Sta. Ana, Manila Thursday evening.

Coast Guard divers fished out the body of Samuel Provido, a resident of Onyx street, more than an hour after the accident. He was declared dead on arrival at the Ospital ng Maynila.

Police said the boy and his playmate snuck through a gap in the chicken-wire fence surrounding the creek at the back of a playground along Pedro Gil street. Provido slipped and fell into the creek. His playmate informed bystanders about the accident, but searchers failed to find the boy.

Residents called on the local government to repair the gaps in the chicken-wire fence to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.    – Non Alquitran, Nestor Etolle
