The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested a senior police officer for extorting money from jeepney drivers and operators in Tondo, Manila Thursday night.
Senior Police Officer 4 Raymund Layug, who was deputized by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to man the flow of traffic, was arrested in his own house on Navarro street in an entrapment operation conducted by a CIDG-Manila team led by Superintendent Joaquin Alva.
Alva said the entrapment operation stemmed from a complaint of jeepney operator Isagani Angeles that Layug has been demanding protection money from their group.
“For almost seven years, Layug has been using his residence as a virtual office where he receives the weekly bribe money and as redemption area for confiscated licenses of jeepney drivers,” Alva said of Angeles’ complaint.
Alva instructed Angeles to contact Layug, who was caught in the act of accepting P500 marked money.
Police also recovered from Layug a record book that details a list of money he apparently received.– Cecille Suerte Felipe, Nestor Etolle
