Slain nursing grad’s kin seeks witnesses

The parents of a nursing graduate who was stabbed dead in Mandaluyong City last week urged witnesses yesterday to come out in the open and help the local police crack the senseless killing of their son.

Gener and Editha Garcia, who flew all the way from the United States, said witnesses can directly approach them if they are not comfortable contacting the local police.

The Garcias said they are determined to use all legal means to seek justice for the death of their son, Glen, 23, a nursing graduate at the De Los Santos-STI College.

Garcia was on his way home at around 10 p.m. last Aug. 6 when his attacker or attackers stabbed him in the chest. The incident happened a few blocks away from his apartment.

A barangay tanod rushed Glen to the Lourdes Hospital, where he died while being treated.

Mandaluyong police chief Senior Superintendent Ericson Velasquez said investigators went to the scene of the crime but failed to get any witnesses as most of them refused to talk.

Prior to Glen’s death, a commotion occurred in the area for yet unknown reasons.

The victim’s family said Glen had just taken the nursing board exams and was eagerly waiting for the results to be out this month. He was reportedly planning to go to the US to work and join his parents, who have been working there for seven years.

Family and friends described the 23-year-old Glen as kind-hearted and gentle. The news of his death came to them as a huge shock as Glen never had an enemy.

Velasquez said they are still determining what caused the attack. Aside from the barangay tanod who brought the victim to the hospital, none of the people who were near the area during the incident have coordinated with authorities.

Glen’s parents said witnesses may call or text them at cell phone number 0919-5765811 should they have information leading to the solution of the case.

They said Glen’s case should also serve as warning to people who frequent the bridge along the San Juan-Mandaluyong boundary since there have been reports of frequent robberies and killings in the area that remain unsolved.
