Las Piñas to get more anti-flooding projects

- Michael Punongbayan -

Las Piñas City Mayor Vergel Aguilar has vowed to push for more projects and continue existing ones to minimize flooding in the city.

He said massive repair, construction and declogging of the city’s canals and drainage systems remain a priority in the city government’s overall disaster plan to deal with heavy rains.

Aguilar said early preparation and continuous declogging and desilting of canals, creeks and drainage systems in the city, conducted by the city’s engineering office, has prevented various areas from being flooded in the wake of two tropical storms that entered the country last week.

Aguilar lauded engineer Rose Bantog, the entire city engineering department, and the Clean and Green brigade for the efficient flood control measures that kept most of Las Piñas free from floodwaters.

He said measures to mitigate floods in vulnerable areas –  such as Santos Homes Subdivision, Mapayapa Village and Tramo in Barangay Pulanglupa Uno – are being stepped up to ensure the safety of residents during heavy rains.

He also called on residents to do their share by disposing their garbage properly in order to avoid clogging canals and drainage systems.

Aguilar said residents should follow the garbage collection schedule and refrain from leaving their trash outside their houses, especially when it is raining.

Las Piñas currently has 62 compactors and 10 dump trucks that collect more than 600 cubic meters of garbage in the city’s 20 barangays daily.
