Workers assail DOTC

- Rainier Allan Ronda -

At least one million employees in the insurance sector will lose their jobs if the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) will implement an order awarding to the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) the exclusive right to issue compulsory third party liability (CTPL) insurance for all motor vehicles.

The Bukluran ng Manggagawa sa Industria ng Seguro (BMIS) and the Alliance of Non-Life Insurance Workers of the Philippines (ANLIWP), said that workers belonging in the two organizations will oppose the implementation of DOTC department order no. 2007-28 that saw publication last July 5.

Salvador Navidad and Pablo Maun, president of BMIS and ANLIWP, issued a joint statement yesterday appealing to President Arroyo to study the adverse effects the DOTC order will cause to the employees of insurance companies, agents, and brokers, and goes against her 10-point agenda which includes job generation as one of its main thrusts.         It was learned that the DOTC had come up with the order in a bid to put a stop to the sale of overpriced and fake insurance to motor vehicle owners who have their vehicles registered every year at the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
