Re-electionist Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. seems to be headed towards a landslide victory with 363,581 votes over the 3,418 combined votes gathered by his three opponents, according to partial unofficial results of ongoing canvassing in Quezon City Hall.

In the 2004 election, Belmonte received an overwhelming victory of more than 400,000 votes for his second term in office against former mayor Ismael Mathay – the first in the city’s history that a candidate won by this margin.

Quezon City has 1.2 million registered voters in 2004, with more than 700,000 trooping to poll precincts to cast their ballot.

Vice Mayor Herbert Bautista, who is running under Belmonte’s SB Performance team, received 347,221 votes over the combined votes 7,741 of his political rivals in the three districts of the city.

In the congressional race, SB Performance team re-electionist Reps. Bingbong Crisologo, Annie Suzano, and Nanette Castelo Daza are leading in the  initial counting of votes.

Crisologo has 71,290 votes while his opponent, former councilor Romel Abesamis, received 21,819; Susano garnered 58,507 while his opponent, former congressman Chuck Mathay, has 47,727; former congressman Dante Liban got 20,236 votes while former mayor Jun Simon got 15,032.

Results from the fourth district are still unavailable as of press time.

Belmonte and his winning team may be proclaimed in the next few days since the canvassing is going smoothly, save for some minor altercations among candidates watching the tabulation.

The Comelec has enforced tight security around the city hall complex, where the counting is going on. News photographers and television cameramen are barred from entering the tabulation area.

Meanwhile, Belmonte and Crisologo led city officials Tuesday in cleaning up election paraphernalia that littered the city.

The city government had set a clean-up plan days before the election, deploying street sweepers to ensure the speedy clean-up of campaign materials.
