Police keeping eye on motels, inns this Valentine’s Day

- Evelyn Macairan -
The Manila Police District (MPD) has intensified patrols around motels in the city to prevent couples of minor age from engaging in "short-time" stay in such establishments especially with Valentine’s Day just around the corner.

MPD officer-in-charge Police Superintendent Danilo Abarzosa said motels have been reminded by the city government to strictly enforce an ordinance that prohibits "short-time" stay in motels and inns.

He assured the public that the police is seriously implementing the City Ordinance No. 7774, otherwise known as the "Ordinance Prohibiting Short-Time Admission," which has been in effect since Nov. 10, 1992. The law as passed at the time when Sen. Alfredo Lim was then mayor and Manila was known as the nation’s "sin city."

"We already have police mobiles patrolling around the motels to ensure that minors, especially students wearing their school uniforms, would not be allowed. Short-time is not allowed in Manila," said Abarzosa.

With Valentine’s Day only four days away, lovers are expected to flock to Sta. Mesa, Quiapo and Avenida area in Sta. Mesa where many motels and inns abound.

February is the peak season for motels, most of which even put up decorations and offer special rates to attract customers.
