He said the Quezon City government had allocated of P2.8 million before the end of December for the completion of the Gearing Up Internet Literacy and Access for Students (GILAS) project that provides Internet connection to the city’s public high schools.
The city government has initially released some P1.2 million as the local government’s counterpart fund to the Ayala Foundation Inc., the project’s proponent. The project includes the internet connection of the 45 schools, including the purchase of computer units, server, printer and network peripherals required for the Internet connectivity.
Belmonte said the GILAS project is a very good model for future projects.
GILAS is a multi-sectoral initiative that will provide Internet access to students and basic literacy program to the 5,443 public high schools nationwide.
He urged City Schools Superintendent Dr. Victoria Fuentes to ensure that all equipment and software being delivered to the schools are functional and in order in accordance with the memorandum of agreement signed between the city government and the Ayala Foundation, Inc.
Bayan Telecommunications, a member of the GILAS consortium, is providing the schools with the Internet connection through broadband technology.
