‘Beware of persons posing as Meralco employees’

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) advised all its customers yesterday to beware of persons posing as its employees.

"We received information that there are persons posing as Meralco employees and inquiring about the consumption patterns of some residents in the Metro area," said Elpi Cuna Jr., Meralco’s vice president for corporate communication."

"It seems their modus operandi is to check the appliances and verify consumption so they can get inside the house," he added.

Cuna clarified that Meralco has not authorized nor deployed its field representatives to randomly check on the consumption of individual households nor collect electric bill payments.

"Customers’ consumption patterns are used only as a guide in case of billing complaints. However, even this will not necessitate our employees to go inside the house to check their individual appliances," he warned.

Meralco customers can call tel. no. 16211 to report persons posing as their employees and who reportedly also come in complete uniform with fake identification cards.
