410 families evacuated in Camanava

- Pete Laude -
At least 410 families living along the shorelines and low-lying areas in the Camanava area (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela) were evacuated yesterday as a large part of the northern metropolis remained flooded yesterday.

Majority of the affected families came from the coastal town of Navotas, where six of its 14 barangays remained under the threat of the rising sea water.

In Barangay Sipac Almacin, a total of 106 families were taken to an evacuation center, 71 from Barangay Tanza, 70 from Barangay San Jose, 62 from Barangay Tangos, and eight from Barangay Daang Hari.

Sheryl Gutierrez of the Navotas’ Barangay Affairs and Community Relations Office said Mayor Toby Tiangco visited the evacuees yesterday to assure them of assistance from the local government.

In Malabon City, Mayor Canuto "Tito" Oreta inspected yesterday flood situation in the city’s 31 barangays. The mayor had to ride a military truck as most parts of Malabon remained impassable to light vehicles.

Oreta also supervised the distribution of relief goods to flood victims. At least 16 families in Barangay Panghulo were relocated to higher ground, while seven families in Barangay Dampalit were also taken to an evacuation center.

Classes in all levels in Malabon City and Navotas were suspended yesterday due to flashfloods and a two-meter high tide that occurred at around noon.

In Valenzuela City, some 70 families from Dulong Tangke, Malinta were allowed to return home after spending the night at evacuation centers.

Floodwater in the barangay has receded, officials said.

"However, classes in elementary and high school levels remained cancelled due to the high tide," Marither Menia, Valenzuela City public information officer, said.

Meanwhile, in Caloocan City, classes in elementary and secondary levels in the Dagat-Dagatan area severely affected by flooding were also suspended yesterday.
