Students of Muntinlupa City public schools will soon have a chance to sit down with the Presidential Daughter while reading their favorite books.
Department of Education-Muntinlupa schools division superintendent Fe Faz said around some 100 Grade 3 pupils from the city have been chosen by DepEd to read with Luli Arroyo in Malacañang on July 14.
Faz said the activity is part of the national launching of DepEds "Read-A-Thon" program.
She explained that the Read-A-Thon is incorporated in the "Drop Everything and Read" (DEAR) project of the city, covering students in both the elementary and high school levels.
Faz said they are promoting reading among students through the DEAR project, which was launched in the citys 20 public schools last June.
"The students will be required to read for at least 10 minutes before their classes start. This program will be carried out by teachers in the morning and afternoon classes at all the citys public elementary and high schools," Faz explained.
A "Best Reader" will be chosen from every section in the elementary level. This will be carried out quarterly.
The award will be based on the number of stories or books each student has read.
Faz said that through the project, they would instill the importance of reading among students, especially Grade 1 pupils.
She added they had also forged an agreement with Scholastic Inc., which will distribute 30 books to each class or section in exchange for old newspapers.
Faz said they have an ongoing newspaper drive at all of the citys public schools so that proceeds can be used to put up a mini-library in each classroom. Rhodina Villanueva
