Declogging of waterways near Caloocan schools ordered
July 3, 2006 | 12:00am
To lessen flash floods in low-lying areas in Caloocan City, Mayor Enrico "Recom" Echiverri has directed the city engineering office to double its effort in declogging waterways, especially near school campuses.
Echiverri noted that at least five elementary schools and a high school in Dagat-Dagatan and Maypajo areas are prone to flooding.
These are the Kaunlaran Elementary School, Lerma Elementary School, Maypajo Elementary School, Kasarinlan Elementary School, Sampalukan Elementary School and the Macario B. Asistio High School.
The mayor said the students are the main beneficiaries of the city governments anti-flood drive, citing the inconvenience they suffer during high tide and heavy rains.
The mayor said engineering office crews started cleaning creeks and canals in the city as early as March since it is easier to unclog waterways during summer.
He noted that throwing of garbage in canals remains one of the main causes of clogged waterways.
Apart from clearing canals and creeks, the local government continues to work for the improvement of city roads. Pete Laude
