Taguig teachers hold prayer vigil

A group of teachers held a prayer vigil in front of the Taguig National High School (TNHS) Monday night to reiterate their demand for a school principal, who is reportedly inefficient and abusive, to step down from her post.

Bernadette Bautista, faculty president, said they are urging the Department of Education (DepEd) to immediately take action on the matter so that the problems confronting the school will be resolved.

The vigil at TNHS, which is located in Barangay Lower Bicutan, started at 4 p.m. and ended early in the morning yesterday.

Bautista said the activity proceeded peacefully since they were given permit by the local government. A number of policemen were also sent to secure the area.

"Though we are undertaking protest activities, we still make sure that we are able to do our duties as teachers. We don’t want the students to suffer," she added.

More than 100 teachers, students, and parents staged a protest rally a week ago to demand the ouster of Eleanor Abisado, whom they accuse of illegally collecting fees from students. The protesters also said the school head is not capable of running the school.

"We, from the education sector, should be the ones to exemplify professionalism and integrity. If the students deserve quality teachers, we teachers deserve a quality principal," Bautista stressed.

They already brought to the DepEd’s attention the ongoing dispute at the TNHS which has 90 teachers.

Meanwhile, Abisado denied the allegations saying these were "baseless."
