Is NCRCOM about to be dissolved?

Has the military’s anti-coup unit, the National Capital Region Command (NCRCOM) already outlived its purpose that would be dissolved soon?

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Generoso Senga was non-committal in his answer on what lies ahead for the unit.

"It all depends on the (prevailing security) situation," Senga’s said.

Talks of NCRCOM’s impending disolution was triggered by the non-appointment of a permanent commander of the anti-coup military unit following the retirement of its chief, Lt. Gen. Allan Cabalquinto last month.

At present, Brig. Gen. Salvador Penaflor, Cabalquinto’s deputy, is running in acting capacity the unit that requires a three-star general to command.

"The organization is as dynamic as the situation develops," Senga said in response to media questions.

The NCRCOM, has the military structure of an area command. It was created right after the failed July 27, 2003 Oakwood mutiny to protect the seat of the national government. – Jaime Laude
