Paper factory probed for obscene notebook covers

Malabon City Mayor Canuto Oreta yesterday ordered an investigation on the extent of a paper factorys involvement in the questionable sale of notebooks with obscene covers.
The mayor directed Senior Superintendent Moises Guevarra, city police chief, to undertake a thorough investigation on the matter.
Oreta also ordered City Administrator Dennis Acorda to take legal action against the Keng Hua Paper Products Co. Inc., which holds office at 1000 Gov. W. Pascual Avenue, Potrero, Malabon City.
In his report to Oreta, Guevarra said his men, led by Inspector Jorge Tabayag, investigation chief, went to the firms offices at 10:25 a.m. yesterday in response to the mayors directive but they were told that the president and owner of the company, which he failed to name, was allegedly "out of town."
Guevarra said Ernesto Petero, officer-in-charge of the firms security force, allowed them to enter the compound.
When questioned on the allegation that the company is manufacturing the controversial notebooks, Petero refused to comment.
Tabayag said a follow-up inquiry on the issue is now being undertaken by the police with the city administrator.
The mayors action was prompted by a complaint-letter sent by Melo Acuna, Radio Veritas 846 station manager, last April 18, which sought immediate action against Keng Hua for the obscene notebook covers. The police said the offending cover features a man and a woman locked in an embrace and kissing each other.
"In the interest of public service and fairness, we are respectfully referring the matter for immediate action. We honestly believe such covers are uncalled for, considering its possible impact on children and teenagers," said Acuna.
Sometime during the Holy Week, the Radio Veritas Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Quezon City ordered from Keng Hua some 12,000 pieces of composition/spiral notebooks worth P57,000.
The notebooks were to be distributed by the Catholic radio station the Archdiocese of Manila and neighboring dioceses indigent children as part of its Easter activities. The giveaways include school supplies, candies and rosaries from donors and partners.
"As we were preparing to pack the goodies in small bags, we found some 300 notebooks containing covers we consider obscene," said Acuna.
Acuna enclosed two copies of the notebooks labeled as "Lovers Notes" and "Body Notes" for Oretas evaluation.
