Tunnels and vehicle underpasses located along the 24-kilometer Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) are now undergoing a facelift.
Major cleaning, repair, and repainting are underway in preparation for the opening of classes next month.
Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel are expected to finish the job before the school opening.
Cleaning and repair works are ongoing at the Ayala tunnel under the Metro Rail Transits (MRT) Ayala Terminal in Makati City.
MMDA Sidewalk Clearing Operations Group (SCOG) chief Bobby Esquivel said EDSAs vehicle underpasses definitely need cleaning up.
"After cleaning and fixing whatever needs to be fixed, we will also paint the walls white para mas maganda at mas tumagal (so that it will look better and it will last)," he said.
Esquivel said renovaation in other tunnels like EDSA Shaw, Aurora, P. Tuazon will follow after work at the Ayala underpass is finished.
Esquivel said busted lights are also being replaced to brighten up the passageways at night.
He noted that the MMDA has sent a letter to the general manager of the MRT management regarding the water drip from its terminals.
"Theres probably something wrong with the construction so we wrote them a letter so that they can fix it," he said.
Esquivel said cleaning up EDSAs tunnels form part of MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernandos move to beautify and improve Metro Manila.
Since it is summer, it is also the best time to do some cleaning and repair in preparation for the rainy season.
"Come June, we will have cleaner and safer vehicle passageways," Esquivel said.
He asked motorists to bear with the temporary inconvenience the cleaning and repair operations might cause.
