A worker was killed after a crane malfunctioned and collapsed on him last Monday afternoon at a container yard in Navotas, police said yesterday.
Superintendent Genesis Tolejano, Navotas police chief, identified the victim as Nilo Leseguis, a slingman for the ACJ Container Yard on Honorio Lopez Boulevard, North Bay Boulevard South (NBBS), Navotas.
Leseguis succumbed to severe multiple injuries in the head and body.
Police Officer 1 Joseph Provido, officer-on-case, said the incident happened at around 3 p.m. last Monday inside the ACJ Container Yard.
Witness Alfonso Ilustrisimo, 37, ACJ crane operator and a resident of Batasan Hills, Quezon City, told investigators that Leseguis was standing on the second level of 40-foot container vans being stacked inside the yard when the incident happened.
He said the victim was waiting to undo the sling of the next container Ilustrisimo was maneuvering to place on top of the second level when the crane he was operating malfunctioned.
Ilustrisimo said the hydraulic system that controlled the cable allegedly failed causing the crane boom to collapse, with a steel tubing falling directly on the head of the victim.
