Pasig City has launched an intensified drive to preserve and protect the environment in observance of Earth Day on April 21.
Mayor Vicente Eusebio approved for immediate implementation a series of activities submitted by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) through Councilor Alejandro Santiago.
The activities for the Earth Day celebration kicked off with a visit to commercial and industrial establishments to check on the installation of anti-pollution devices as mandated by the Republic Act 9003, or the Clean Air Act, and other local ordinances.
Businesses not complying with the requirements of Clean Air Act and other local ordinances on environmental protection will be meted the necessary punishment.
Apart from the daily inspections, CENRO is also set to inaugurate the Barangay Kapitolyo Material Recovery Facility, a pilot project of Councilor Bobby Eusebio. The MRF will ensure effective collection and will reduce the volume of garbage that will have to be dumped because recyclable garbage will be segregated. The project being implemented in coordination with the Solid Waste Management Office.
Part of the launching and celebration will be the deputation of Environment Police, the turnover of environment violation tickets for Bantay-Basura, presentation of the SWM monitoring team and waste management plans, awarding of Gawad Kalikasan ng Pasig, establishment of local multipartite monitoring team, anti-smoke belching drive, Balik-Bisikleta, earthquake preparedness drills and other activities related to the preservation of waterways and other natural resources of the city.
"Earth is our life. We must sustain our common efforts to preserve and protect our environment, our natural resources. It is the responsibility of everyone to help preserve and protect the resources that give us life. Anyone who commits any act that will destroy our environment must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law," Eusebio said.
