MRT segregates passengers

- Sandy Araneta -
The Metro Rail Transit (MRT) has started segregating passengers, designating special coaches for women, children, the elderly and disabled.

MRT management said the segregation began last Saturday, April 1, with the first three coaches of trains being designated "for females only."

The scheme is patterned after that of the Monumento-Baclaran Light Rail Transit (LRT) trains, which separated men from women following complaints from women during rush hour when the trains are packed.

Transport Assistant Secretary and MRT general manager Lastimoso said the system was developed after management observed difficulties and discomfort suffered by female, elderly and handicapped MRT riders during peak hours.

MRT 3 chief of operations Mike Narca said elevated platforms have been set up at all MRT stations to separate passengers waiting for trains.

Segregation is being strictly enforced by guards carrying megaphones.

Female passengers, however, can still join male passengers if they choose to do so. Able-bodied male passengers will not be permitted to board the special coaches.
