AFP dismantles Metro checkpoints

- Jaime Laude -
With the easing of coup threats, the Armed Forces of the Philippines-National Capital Regional Command (AFP-NCRCOM) ordered the lifting of all military chokepoints and checkpoints in Metro Manila yesterday.

NCRCOM spokesman Capt. Ramon Zagala said Air Force, Army and Navy troops manning checkpoints and chokepoints have been recalled to their respective mother units.

Despite the recall order, the NCRCOM remains on blue alert status, Zagala said.

"Effective noon today, all checkpoints at entry points to the NCR will be pulled out due to improved security situation," Zagala said.

At the height of the foiled civilian and military backed uprising on Feb. 24, NCRCOM commander Lt. Gen. Allan Cabalquinto sealed all entry points to prevent anti-government forces from sneaking into Metro Manila.

These entry points include the South and the North Luzon expressways, Coastal Road and Sumulong Highway.

Cabalquinto also deployed troops to key television stations and the Transmission Co., the power distribution arm of the National Power Corp., to prevent them from being taken over by hostile forces.
