Carjack-slay suspect killed, 2 others held

A suspect in the Parañaque City carjacking incident that left a 19-year-old nursing student dead was killed yesterday while two of his cohorts were nabbed in a manhunt that ended in La Union province.
Parañaque police chief Superintendent Ronald Estilles identified the fatality as Estiven Liwanag, of Tondo Manila. The suspect, later identified as a traffic enforcer of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, was reportedly killed in an operation conducted by the operatives of Traffic Management Group (TMG)-Region 4.
Details of the incident were not available as of press time.
The two arrested suspects were identified as Roberto Pepito, 46, and Raymond Bongabong, 30, both of Las Piñas City.
Last Sunday, nursing student Richard Capili was shot dead when three men forcibly took his black Toyota Revo in front of the LBC Landco Center Mall along President’s Avenue in Parañaque at around 6:30 p.m.
Estilles said a police asset told them that the carjackers initially proceeded to Cavite to sell the AUV, which by then was already repainted dark brown.
"However, the group changed their plans and decided to sell and bring the car to La Union, where a buyer was waiting for them. When they arrived, they were already being trailed by members of TMG-Region 4," the police official said.
Senior Superintendent Mike Saturnino of the TMG-Region 4 said the suspects were arrested in Barangay Patak in Sto. Tomas, La Union. The Revo was also recovered.
Estilles said the chassis number on the official receipt of the car registration matched that of the Revo seized from the suspects.
He pointed out that information provided to them showed the group usually operates in Metro Manila and in several provinces of Southern Luzon.
The victim’s parent’s, Remi and Cheryl Capili, appealed for help in seeking justice for their son.
"We are grateful to the mayor for his help as we seek justice for this senseless killing," the father said.
Their son was inside his Revo waiting for his sister at the Little Town Book Store when three men, one armed with a caliber .45 revolver, boarded the vehicle and started beating him up.
A shot was then fired. Although wounded, Capili managed to break free from his assailants and shouted for help. The man with the gun, fired again, hitting Capili in the right side of the body.
The suspects then fled aboard his Revo.
A rescue team from Barangay BF rushed the victim to the Parañaque Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead 15 minutes after his body was brought in.
Meanwhile, Parañaque Mayor Florencio Bernabe has clarified that the incident happened outside the subdivision gates.
He made the clarification after members of the United BF Homeowners Association claimed that the opening up of village gates made the city prone to attacks by criminal elements.
"The crime took place 200 meters away from the nearest subdivision gate and the site has long been developed as a commercial area," Bernabe said.
The mayor earlier initiated the release of P200,000 as reward money to persons who can provide vital information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
