Nursing student killed by robbers near UST

- Nestor Etolle -
An 18-year-old male nursing student was shot dead when he resisted a robbery attempt by two armed men as he was walking with his girlfriend near the University of Sto. Tomas campus in Manila last Friday night.

Dead on arrival at the UST Hospital was Jeff Marty Longyapon, of 847-C Ibarra street, Sampaloc. He sustained two gunshot wounds in the body.

The victim’s girlfriend was taken at the same hospital after suffering from nervous breakdown.

Investigation showed the couple went to a mall to unwind after taking their final examinations at UST.

After spending several hours at the mall, the two decided to return to UST. When their jeepney reached A. H. Lacson in front of the university, the couple alighted.

They were walking toward the campus gate at around 7:30 p.m. when two armed men appeared and announced a holdup.

The victim tried to resist and was shot by the two suspects. The suspects divested the two of their belongings and fled on foot.

Both suspects were in their late 20s and armed with guns of still unknown caliber.

Several students have reportedly been victimized by robbers lurking near the school campus at night.

School officials have called the attention of the Sampaloc police station under Superintendent Bernardo Diaz on the rising incidents of robbery in the area.

In Malabon City, a man was killed while his wife and a male neighbor were seriously hurt after an unidentified suspect threw a hand grenade at them as they fetched water from a public tap early yesterday.

Forensic investigators said Rolly Rondina, 27, a native of Surigao del Norte and resident of 215 Dumpsite Sitio 6, Catmon, Malabon succumbed to multiple blast and shrapnel injuries in the head and body.

Rondina’s wife Adela, 30, who was with him when the suspect struck, sustained injuries in the chest and abdomen.

Neighbor Sherwin Hisoli, 23 was hit by shrapnel in the body as he slept in his house nearby. Both were taken to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center in Manila for treatment.

Police said they face a blank wall as to the identity of the suspect as nobody saw him at the time of the incident. – With Jerry Botial
