Manila to host biggest marathon
July 11, 2005 | 12:00am
The Manila City government will host a marathon that will be participated in by more than 40,000 runners, hoping to get a crack in breaking a Guinness Book of World Records.
Arnold Atienza, head of the citys Manila Sports Council (MSC), said preparations are now underway for the 3rd Manila Marathon slated on July 24.
The title currently belongs to Boston, Massachusetts which was able to draw 38,000 runners during their centennial celebration four or five years ago. Atienza said he is optimistic that they would be able to surpass this number and attract at least 40,000 people.
"We are targeting at least 40,000 participants who would be willing to join the different categories three, five, 10 or 42 kilometers," Atienza said, adding that the Guinness requires that more than 30,000 participants finish the marathon.
He recalled that they had a chance to beat Bostons record last year when more than 40,000 peopleparticipated in the 2nd Manila Marathon. Unfortunately, they were late in submitting the application to Guinness, and thus was not recognized.
Atienza admitted that as of yesterday, he does not have the exact number of participants yet but said they are concentrating their efforts in involving the youth. Besides, he added, the bulk of the participants often register a day or two before the day of the event.
Elementary and high school students from 130 public schools, 60 private schools, and 50 colleges and universities have pledged to send representatives. There would also be delegates from 10 major cities.
The MSC is also coordinating with the 895 barangays in Manila City and the National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA).
Registration is free but runners are asked to donate canned goods, which the MSC would donate to depressed areas.
The call time for those joining the 42-kilometer run is at 4 a.m. on July 24. Those joining the other categories should be at the Luneta Park at 6 a.m. Atienza said they are still finalizing the route of the marathon but participants would definitely pass by the citys major thoroughfares.
