Qccci supports anti-piracy ordinance

The Quezon City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCCI) throws its full backing behind the proposed anti-piracy ordinance that will give the city mayor the power to suspend and cancel the business permits of establishments found violating Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) law.

Nathan Zulueta, QCCCI Chairman, said "the strict enforcement of the ordinance, if passed, will establish a viable business environment in the local government level and strengthen the country’s anti-piracy drive.

Zulueta said the local government plays a key role in the governments’ IPR protection campaign. Enforcement efforts of the Optical Media Board, National Bureau of Investigation, Intellectual Property Office and other law enforcement agencies can be greatly enhanced and sustained.

The proposed ordinance will also boost Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr.’s strong advocacy of the protection of copyright laws.

Majority Floor leader Ariel Inton, principal author of the ordinance, said that once approved, the ordinance will impose punishment to individuals found responsible for the manufacture, sale, production, distribution and retail of pirated products. — Perseus Echeminada
