SPO1 Ruben Esteves, officer-on-case of the Marikina City Police Traffic Enforcement Unit, identified the fatality as Encarnacion Quitan, 52, of Sampaloc, Manila.
Quitan, who was on board the jeepney, was dead on arrival at the Amang Rodriguez Medical Center in Marikina City.
Eight other passengers of the jeepney were hurt. They were identified as Ma. Lourdes Sininajan, 17, of Project 4, Quezon City; Connie Baraya, 30, of Candaba, Pampanga; Raul Bagamas, 35, of Siniluan, Laguna; Francia Saberon, 28, of Sto. Niño, Marikina City; Allan Abenes, 24, of Kamias, Quezon City; Ericson Valdez, 26, of Project 4, Quezon City; Janet Barnes, 8; Lilia Fernandez, 38, of Rodriguez, Rizal.
Marcela Ruiz, 92, was injured when the jeepney smashed into her house on A. Bonifacio Avenue in Barangay Barangka.
They were all brought to the Amang Rodriguez Medical Center for treatment.
The still unidentified driver of the passenger jeepney fled after the incident, police said.
In a report, police said that at 10:15 a.m., a passenger jeepney, with plate number TVZ-530, was traveling on the eastbound lane of A. Bonifacio Avenue when its brakes malfunctioned.
The jeepney hit the vehicle in front a Tamaraw FX (PWT-422) driven by Roland Abergas, 36, of Sto. Niño, Marikina.
As a result of the collision, the jeepney swerved to the right, went over the sidewalk and smashed into two houses on A. Bonifacio Avenue.
The impact killed one passenger.
The two vehicles and the two houses were badly damaged, police said.
Police are now looking for the driver of the passenger jeepney.
