Muntinlupa asks PNCC to consult city on repairs

- Edu Punay -
The city government of Muntinlupa wants to have a hand in the planned rehabilitation of the Alabang viaduct and parts of South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) in the locality.

Through a resolution passed last week, the Muntinlupa City Council has asked the Philippine National Construction Corp. (PNCC) to consult with the local government before starting with the project.

Councilor Allan Rey Camilon, author of the resolution, said it was necessary for the PNCC to furnish them with the traffic plan to be used during the construction as well as a copy of proposed toll increase.

Camilon argued that the flyover is the busiest thoroughfare in the city and they would certainly have problems once construction begins.

"The planned rehabilitation of SLEX would definitely create heavy traffic along the city’s main thoroughfare, thus an adverse effect on the city’s economic progress due to idle investment," the resolution stated.

Camilon also stressed they want to prevent similar experiences in Valenzuela and Bulacan, where the road repair projects of PNCC aggravated the traffic situation in area.

He explained that the construction of the North Luzon Expressway, which resulted in a significant increase in toll rates, has caused heavy congestion on local roads, often used by motorists to avoid paying toll.

The PNCC is currently repairing both lanes of SLEX from Alabang to Calamba in Laguna as a preliminary phase of the project.

PNCC officials earlier said the repair would be necessary before they could begin with the overhaul of Alabang viaduct.
