Jeepneys use fake LTFRB fare matrices

Jeepney operators in some parts of Quezon City were found to be using fake and photocopied fare matrices so that they can charge passengers the additional P2 fare hike approved by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), The STAR learned yesterday.

Among the passenger jeepneys that are using photocopied fare matrices are those plying the Marcos Highway via Tandang Sora to University of the Philippines (UP), Tandang Sora City Hall, Cubao, Project 6 and Pag-asa and the Philcoa to Quiapo routes.

The use of photocopied and fake matrices has reportedly caused arguments between drivers and passengers who refused to pay the new rate.

LTFRB Chairperson Elena Bautista has earlier warned operators that they cannot charge passengers of the new rates unless they secure the fare matrix from the LTFRB.

A random survey conducted by The STAR showed that some operators photocopy the original fare matrix and imprint their vehicle‘s license plate on the document.

Some drivers, however, don’t charge their passengers the new rate without the matrix for fear of being arrested and fined.

"Mahirap dalawang piso lang mahuli ka pa (It's hard. For only P2, you may get arrested," a driver said. Perseus Echeminada
