Two die in Tondo fire

A 50-year-old nanny and her 10-year-old Filipina-Japanese ward died in a fire that struck a two-story house in Tondo, Manila yesterday.

Arson investigators identified the victims as Letty Uy and her ward Ay Yoshida.

Initial investigation showed that the victims were still asleep at around 6:24 a.m. at the second floor of their house at 389 D. Coral Street when the fire started.

Investigators said Uy managed to get out of the burning house but rushed inside when she learned that Yoshida was left behind.

According to investigators, Uy was trapped inside the burning house. Both victims died from second-degree burns, arson investigators said.

The victims’ companions, identified as Maria Agapay, 31; Aiko Heart, three months old; her sister Ara, five years old; and twins Ryan and Chellie Uy, five years old; were rushed to the Mary Johnston Hospital where they were treated for slight injuries.

Investigators said the fire lasted until 7:03 a.m. and reached third alarm. No other houses were affected by the fire.

Arson probers are still determining the cause of the blaze as of press time.
