Worker falls to his death

Strong winds caused a 40-year-old male utility worker fell to his death from the eighth floor of the Philippine General Hospital along Taft Avenue in Ermita, Manila yesterday morning.

Police identified the fatality as Christopher Florin, of Barangay Banlic, Calamba, Laguna. His mangled body was retrieved by co-workers at the concrete canopy on the fourth floor of the hospital.

PO1 Rommel del Rosario ruled out foul play or suicide in the death of the victim. He said Florin could have lost his balance due to the strong winds while cleaning an open portion at the eighth floor of the hospital.

"I noticed that the concrete ledge, where the victim had been working, was slippery due to accumulation of moss. Besides, the winds are stronger here at the top of the building," Del Rosario said.

Meanwhile, the harbor pilot of the South Harbor in Manila fell into the murky and rocky waters off Manila Bay when he slipped and fell from the gangplank of WG&A Superferry 19 yesterday afternoon.

Capt. Luis Nuñez, South Harbor pilot, fell into the waters while climbing the said ship’s gangplank at around 2:10 p.m.

Nuñez had just piloted the ship to its storm period docking berth at Pier 15 of the harbor when the accident occurred.

Rescue operations are still ongoing as of 5 p.m. The rescue efforts, South Harbor port officials said, was being hindered by the strong wings and heavy rains brought by typhoon Igme. – Nestor Etolle, Rainier Allan Ronda
