Summer jobs for Navotas students

Some 60 poor, but deserving students from Navotas have been hired for summer jobs by the municipal government, Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco announced yesterday. The job opportunity is offered under the local government’s Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES).

"Through this program, we aim to instill in the minds of the young Navoteños the importance and value of hard work and of making productive use of their vacation. We have seen to it that only the most deserving and the best qualified are accepted in the program," said Tiangco.

Tiangco said the students, at least all college level, will work for one whole month and will be assigned to augment the workforce in the different departments of the municipal government. The hirees will resume the work of clerks, encoders, liaison officers, aides and will mainly perform auxiliary jobs.

The hirees were thoroughly screened and evaluated by the Public Employment and Service Office (PESO) based on strict policies and procedures required under the SPES.

"Our personnel office (PESO) did some background checking. An evaluation after each interview with the applicants were made to finally decide who will make it to the program," said Jerry Doringo, public information office (PIO) chief.

Tiangco said the students will be receiving the existing minimum wage where the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will shoulder 40 percent and the municipal government the remaining 60 percent.

Tiangco said the local government sets aside funds for the continuing SPES projects and other related summer youth programs including the free sports clinic, theater workshops and inter-barangay sportsfest. – Jerry Botial
