QC inmate tries suicide

A 55-year-old inmate at the Quezon City Jail (QCJ) is now under observation at the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) after leaping from a 30-foot fence at the detention center the other night in a foiled suicide attempt.
Bayani Mercado, who was detained at the QCJ for frustrated murder, was confined at EAMC due to fractured bones and bruises.
According to JO1 Adrian Ambulan, the incident happened at around 11 p.m. on Monday at the QCJ compound.
The inmate reportedly found his way out of the cell and made his way to the roof of a cooperative office through barbed wire and grills.
Jail guards saw Mercado and asked him to go down. Not heeding their call, the guards fired a warning shot. This, however, did not deter Mercado.
Minutes later, the prisoner jumped off the fence, hitting the roof and iron grills before finally landing on the ground.
It was learned that Mercado had been feeling depressed because no relative has visited him for the past three months.
