Terror ex-convict hauled back to jail

- Pete Laude -
Two months after he was released from prison for illegal drugs offenses, a jobless man was hauled back to jail for attacking his neighbors with a jungle bolo last Friday in Caloocan City.

Roberto Masungsong, 32, of Bangayngay street, Barangay 12, Caloocan, was again put behind bars with charges of four counts of attempted murder and one count of illegal possession of bladed weapon.

The city prosecutors’ office recommended a P480,000 bail for the suspect’s temporary liberty, police said.

Superintendent Simon Fernan, Northern-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) chief, said that at around 8 p.m, Porferia Apostol, 57, of Block 13, Lot 13, Bangayngay street, Barangay 12, Caloocan, sought the help of his men after Masungsong, high on illegal drugs, with his two cohorts, identified as Reynaldo Garcia and Joseph Barbi, assaulted her family.

PO3 Dandie Bonita, PO2 Rod Adao and agent Vher Torres were immediately dispatched to the area and caught the suspect engaging in a scuffle with bystanders.

According to Torres, Masungsong, armed with a 21-inch jungle bolo barged inside the Apostols’ residence for no apparent reason while his two companions served as lookouts.

The suspect first attacked Porferia but the old woman was able to flee and sought the help of her daughter Jocelyn.

The two women, however, were no match with the suspect and both scampered to safety.

Daniel Apostol, 20, put up a fight but was hacked and wounded in the arm by the suspect.

Daniel’s father, Alejandro, 50, with the help of their concerned neighbors, came to the rescue of his beleaguered family and overpowered Masungsong while the suspect’s two companions, escaped.
