Coming soon: QC footbridges

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando said Monday the agency would speed up the construction of footbridges, following the reported deaths of two pedestrians who were ran over by vehicles on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.

Pedestrians have complained that it is now dangerous to cross the streets because of the clearway.

The agency will construct a total of 12 footbridges in Commonwealth, Quezon Avenue, and C-5, using P100 million it received from the Office of the President, was part of the P400 million pledge President Arroyo made last September.

The 12 footbridges cost a total of P96.9 million.

In Commonwealth, the MMDA will build footbridges near the University of the Philippines-Asian Institute of Management (UP-AIT) and Commission on Audit (COA).

Footbridges are now being constructed at the intersections of EDSA and Aurora Boulevard, amounting to P35.4 million.

The document also showed that construction of the footbridges across Commonwealth at Don Antonio Heights, Feria Compound, Tandang Sora, and Litex Road would be implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the Quezon City government.

The Quezon City government, the document indicated, will fund the footbridge across Elliptical Road fronting the City Hall and Litex Road, amounting to P32 million.— Nikko Dizon
