Man pinned to death between two buses

- Nikko Dizon -
A man in a hurry to get home was pinned to death by two public utility buses (PUBs) early yesterday morning in Makati City.

Police said victim Avino Idjao, 60, messenger, and a resident of Bagumbayan, Taguig, was killed after the Golden Hi-way bus he tried to board overtook another bus on the southbound lane of EDSA corner Ayala Avenue.

Case investigator SPO2 Carlos Sebastian Gonda of the Makati Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) said the accident happened at around 6 a.m.

Investigation showed Idjao rushed to get on the Golden Hi-way bus with license plates NVJ 884, and clung on its rear door. However, driver Remigio Jimenez, 32, tried to overtake the BBL Transport bus (PV 161), which was stationary.

The Golden Hi-way’s right side hit the other bus’ left rear, pinning Idjao who did not make it inside the PUB.

The victim was rushed to the Makati Medical Center but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Inspector Gilberto Loteria, chief of the Makati TEU, said Idjao sustained a crushed skull and injuries in the body.

Police arrested both Jimenez and Ruando for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide.

Loteria said it was the conductor’s responsibility to control the doors of a passenger bus. But Ruando kept the passenger doors open, allowing the victim to rush and cling to the bars.

Conductors, he said, must only open the doors at proper loading and unloading areas.

Jimenez and Ruando are now detained at the TEU headquarters, awaiting charges to be filed against them before the Makati prosecutor’s office.
