August 2, 2003 | 12:00am
An inmate was shot dead while his companion was wounded when they tried to escape from their detention center in Pasig City yesterday.
The victim, Arnold Cajan, 33, sustained a gunshot wound in the head and died while being rushed to the Rizal Medical Center in Pasig City. His companion, Angelito Bautista was hit in the right thigh and is now being treated in the same hospital.
Initial investigation showed that Cajan, who had been serving a robbery sentence, went out of his cell at the city jail located in Nagpayong, Barangay Pinagbuhatan at 5:30 a.m. yesterday to dispose of a plastic bag of garbage.
Jail Officer 1 Joseph Ordoña said he opened the main gate to allow Cajan throw the trash outside, but to his surprise the victim pushed the gate toward him causing him to fall to the pavement.
Cajan then made a dash for freedom and was closely followed by Bautista, who is also serving time for robbery. The two men were armed with ice picks, police probers said.
Another guard, SJO1 Fernan Sunga, tried to intercept the suspects, but Cajan stabbed him in the left shoulder.
Cajan then grabbed Sungas service firearm and both men wrestled for possession.
It was at this juncture when a shot rang out and Cajan fell to the ground, blood oozing from his shoulder and head.
Seeing his fallen comrade, Bautista attacked Sunga, but Ordoña shot him in the thigh before he could inflict harm on his companion. Non Alquitran
