Metro anti-drug units revitalized

- Bebot Sison Jr., Cecille Suerte Felipe -
The Metro Manila Police is revitalizing its anti-drug units to further intensify the government’s campaign against illegal drugs following an order from President Arroyo.

Drug Enforcement Units at the Western Police District (WPD) headquarters and 11 police stations will be dissolved to pave the way for the creation of the anti-illegal drug task force.

Senior Supt. Juanito de Guzman, WPD deputy director for administration, said the task force will complement the operation of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).

"The task force is basically similar to the DEG, although we are thinking of other better programs to ensure success of the anti-drug campaign," De Guzman added.

Following the directive of the President, Philippine National Police-Deputy Director for Administration General Edgar Aglipay instructed officials of the five police districts in Metro Manila to revitalize their anti-drug campaign.

Under the implementing rules and regulations barangay officials would be tapped to help police in going after drug pushers and users in their respective barangays.

"With the new set-up, we are optimistic that the campaign against illegal drugs will have positive results," De Guzman added.

"Concerned citizens have raised apprehension on the worsening drug problem. Shabu is being sold like candies on the streets near schools. If these illegal activities will not be stopped, it would become a serious problem of the government," he said.
