LRTA Administrator Teddy Cruz Jr. said that LRT-2 is expected to ease the traffic problem in Metro Manila, eventually improving the quality of life of urban residents.
"As in the mass railways projects, LRT-2 is intended to provide the people with alternative means of transportation. It will be then faster, more accessible and more convenient for those traveling the east-to-west route to take the LRT-2," he said.
The P31-billion LRT-2 is 13.8 kms. in length and passes through Pasig, Marikina, Quezon City, San Juan and Manila. It runs along the stretch of Marcos Highway, Aurora Blvd., Ramon Magsaysay Blvd., and Legarda.
The first phase of the project from Pasig City to Cubao will open next month while the second phase from Cubao to C.M. Recto in Manila will be operational in 2004.
Under the plan, LRT-2 will be interconnected with other mass rail transit projects of the government like the 18-station LRT-1 and the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) which has 13 stations, making travel in the metropolis faster and more convenient. The 13-station LRT runs along Rizal Avenue and Taft Avenue while MRT is based along EDSA.
Cruz said that with LRT-2 the travel time from Pasig to Recto is only 30 minutes. During peak hours, the travel time for this distance reaches almost three hours in land-based transport facilities.
Cruz added that LRT-2 would attract a considerable share of the traveling public, resulting in less traffic congestion on roads, reduction in air pollution, a cleaner environment and savings in travel time.
"LRT-2 will open commercial and office development opportunities in areas along its line, contributing to faster urban renewal," Cruz said.
