PNP still handling Campos case

The investigation into the murder of police Superintendent John Campos remains the job of the Philippine National Police (PNP), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Reynaldo Wycoco stressed yesterday.
While the NBI is conducting a "low key" probe to assist the police, Wycoco explained, it is still the PNP who is in charge of the probe.
"Unless we get an order from Malacañang, we will leave the investigation to the PNP. We have decided to let the police handle the investigation. The police are doing the right thing at this time," he said.
Wycoco also denied reports that controversial agent Mary "Rosebud" Ong has already submitted her statement to the NBI regarding the case.
"She has not yet approached the NBI. As we are not yet officially conducting a probe into the incident, perhaps it would be best if she submits her statement to the PNP," Wycoco said.
Meanwhile, Ongs lawyer said he and his client are set to ask President Arroyo to make the NBI the lead agency in the investigation, claiming they had little faith in the impartiality of the police.
"We would rather give justice a chance through the NBI," lawyer Leonardo Vera Ong said in a phone interview. He added that he is still preparing the letter to the President.
