Drug tests for PUV drivers in UP

-
University of the Philippines-Diliman has required all drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) plying the UP-Ikot, Toki, Philcoa, SM and Philtranco routes to undergo mandatory drug testing.

Capt. Isagani Lacsamana, head of the UP-Diliman police traffic division and head of Oplan Alis Droga sa Lansangan, has contracted the services of DrugCheck Phils Inc., a nationwide drug testing firm, to conduct the tests.

In a statement, DrugCheck quoted Lacsamana as saying that robberies, holdups and other crimes as well as accidents and traffic altercations can be minimized if a systematic drug detection program is instituted among different sectors.

"The traffic transportation sector carries with itself a vital public trust of ensuring commuters’ safety," he said.

"As such, UP has every right to expect that our brothers in the transportation industry are one with our intention of providing a safe, conducive and drug-free environment for our students," he added.

DrugCheck lauded UP’s initiative, through the office of Vice Chancellor for Community Development Gil Gotianco and the UP-Diliman police.
